Sabroso

(sa’bro’so) adjective, derivation: Spanish 1. Savory, flavorful. 2. In good taste 3. Colorado Springs’ newest Salsa and Latin Dance band.

Sabroso is Colorado Spring’s new Salsa and Latin Dance orchestra. Started as the dreamchild of two musicians’ desire to create a local outlet for the great musical styles of Salsa and latin music, and as a way to pass this great music down to the next generation of musicians and music fans in our area.

The leaders of this group are Dennis Bueno, an excellent percussionist and drummer who is an established Colorado musician and networking professional and Bud Gordon, a trumpet player and veteran of many of Los Angeles’ hot salsa bands.

Bud Gordon grew up in Los Angeles and learned to play in the nationally known Eagle Rock High School music program, which produced many great musicians in the 1970’s. After school, Bud toured with Ray Charles, playing the first trumpet chair. When Bud returned to Los Angeles, he immediately became part of the vibrant salsa music scene there. Bud’s first salsa experience was with the L.A. Salsa All-stars, whose members included trombonist Art Velasco and trumpeter John Madrid. He continued with many of the area’s finest bands, including Orquesta Verano, Orquesta Mazacote, Sorpresa, Banda Azucar, Nenque Hernandez’ charanga band, and playing and recording with Ilyana and the Island Knights. Also during that time were stints backing up salsa superstars Hansel, Willie Chirino, and Ray Sepulveda. These experiences laid the groundwork for Bud’s love of salsa and latin music that continues with Orquesta Sabroso.

Dennis Bueno was born of parents from Trinidad. He has been involved with music since his early childhood. From the days of listening to his grandfather playing the violin and singing, dance and music were recreation for his parents. They spent many days on their footwork. Dennis especially remembers the days his mother taught him to Cha-Cha-Cha. Dennis began to study music at the age of 5 on the accordion. He took to learning popular songs more than standard studies. During those early years he would perform for family and friends at parties. They would always dance and sing most appreciatively at the many familiar tunes he played. Tips were abundant.

Dennis has performed throughout Colorado in the venues of Jazz, rock, country, polka bands, Ranchera, classical, and Broadway shows.

Now, after years of school, countless hours of working as a professional musician, and now even as a networking professional, Dennis still passionately embraces his early influences of Dancing and Singing through his artistic percussion skills. His energies now are focused on his dream of many years, La Musica Sabroso!

That dream is the New Latin salsa band “Sabroso.” A combination of some of the areas best and most diverse musicians comprise the members of Sabroso. The Salsa they play is a joyous music abundant in percussion and intricate ethnic rhythms influenced by Spanish and African folk traditions. This music is indigenous to the islands of the Caribbean where much of the African and Spanish culture converged. Some of the rhythms that come from this cultural mix are the Bomba, Rhumba, Cha-Cha, Conga, Merengue, and Mambo. The music is rhythmically captivating and musically pleasing. And it will lure your feet to motion, whether you’ve been to the islands or not!

Alan Joseph

Originally from Detroit, Alan Joseph continues to be a musical catalyst in the Pike's Peak Region and Denver. Presently he is instructor of Guitar in the Jazz and Commercial Music Program at the University of Denver 's Lamont School of Music. Along with his studio teaching at Lamont, Alan is part of the acclaimed Lamont Jazz Faculty Combo "The Climb."

Colorado Springs's own, Alan Joseph is getting attention beyond the Rockies with unique ensemble works that range far beyond the music normally associated with Jazz guitar headliners.

Alan's recording Heavy Water Music, available on Fahrenheit Records (www.CDNow.com), was released to wide critical acclaim and he has appeared in Guitar Player, Guitar, and JAZZIZ magazines. When the highly regarded Jazz station KRCC named its top 10 albums a few years ago, Earl Klugh, the Crusaders and Harry Connick all made the list. Guess who was No.1? Alan Joseph, ith his independently produced release Heavy Water Music . Joseph and his trio, H 3 O have received rave reviews in JAZZIZ and an article in Guitar refers to Joseph's playing as "like Pat Metheny, he also has a feel for new melodies that sound familiar. We're talking ear-candy here, the kind that always finds an audience."

Among the many musical adventures that satisfy Alan include performances with Denver's Creative Music Works Orchestra, Maria Schneider, Dave Valentin, Herb Ellis, and Rich Chiaraluce.

Listening to Alan, one can always expect to hear elements of "Straight Ahead" Jazz, Funk, Rhythm and Blues, and even some off-beat "Poetry Jazz" (which at one time involved placing microphones inside watermelons!). When performing with H 3 O (which includes Randy Bowen on drums and Marc Neihof on bass) you can expect a gourmet menu of musical selections from Jazz standards of the Swing, Bebop, and Cool periods to the current trend of contemporary Fusion.

"Another intriguing newcomer to the contemporary jazz scene is also a gifted, well-rounded composer who just happens to be a guitarist. ... Joseph's attraction to Pat Metheny and Weather Report is evident, yet he manages to lead these influences into some interesting territories of his own." JAZZIZ

"Alan plays with a sense of joy and freedom." "Alan Joseph's Heavy Water Music moves from clean, Holdsworthian Prog-Rock with stuttering, syncopated drums into airy Methenyesque dreamscapes. With layers of acoustic and electric textures, Alan's colorful arrangements demonstrate his great ear for orchestrating contrasting guitar tones." Guitar Player

Rythmic Void

A collage of souls that have absolutely
no idea what they do, or of what they are capable

Ideas are criminal
Ideas are suspect
Ideas are void

We get on (as we speak; we play)

Welcome to the club
Something to A-VOID
No more Ideas!!
My head aches!!
